What is Trap Tox?

"Trap Tox" refers to the injection of Botox into the trapezius muscle, one of the many therapeutic indications of the drug. In fact, healthcare providers have been injecting it for several different conditions for over 20 years now. It is one of the areas we target as part of the migraine treatment protocol, as well as for cervical dystonia, both of which are "on label" indications of the drug.

Patients suffering from neck and shoulder pain have long sought out this treatment to help relax tension and even improve mobility. This is what we call therapeutic indications of Botox. There are also cosmetic effects - slimmer shoulders, longer neck.

What is botulinum toxin?

Vistabel®, Bocouture®, and BOTOX® are forms of neuromodulators (Botulinum toxin) that have been purified and diluted to be safe for cosmetic and medical use. Botulinum toxin is a muscle relaxant, and when administered, the toxin temporarily blocks neuron activity, preventing full muscle contraction. When used as a treatment for chronic migraines, Botox is injected near pain fibers in the head or neck involved in headaches. At these locations, it penetrates the nearby nerve endings and does not allow the release of chemicals necessary for pain signals to be sent to your brain.

How does Botox work?

Botox prevents the release of neurotransmitters between nerve and muscle. This blocks nerve impulses to the muscles, preventing them from contracting. Botox can prevent the pain signal from reaching the brain, and the pain signal is treated differently in the brain and spinal cord, making the pain feel less intense. The relieving effect on migraines and headaches is due not to relaxed muscles on the skull, but rather to the pain signal to the brain's headache center being blocked.

How often should you be treated, and how quickly will you notice the effect?

You should be treated approximately every 6-8 months. For some, the effect is already present a few days after the first treatment, while others may need two or three treatments before noticing an optimal effect. Experience shows that it may take a little longer for some to achieve a satisfactory effect. You should be aware that it can take 3-14 days before you begin to feel the effect after a treatment.

Is Botox safe?

Yes. Botox has become a common treatment for chronic migraines. It was FDA-approved for adults with chronic migraines in 2010. Since then, more than 500,000 people with chronic migraines have safely received this effective treatment. Numerous clinical studies have proven that Botox is a safe and effective treatment for chronic migraines and headaches.
