When we laugh, cry or worry, the muscles in the face contract. With age, it can be seen on the face and is called mimic wrinkles. The treatment with botox is effective in getting rid of the facial wrinkles that sit in the upper part of the face. Because even though wrinkles can be beautiful, many people find that excessively obvious wrinkles negatively affect one's quality of life - they do so when they make you look older than you feel.

Botox is a drug (botulinum toxin A) that blocks the contraction of the muscles, allowing the muscles to relax. When the muscles in the face cannot contract, the superficial lines and wrinkles are reduced. Botox does not affect the surrounding muscles and the effect is only local in the treated area.

What is Botulinum toxin (Vistabel® Bocouture®, Dysport® and BOTOX®)?
Botulinum toxin, better known as Botox, is a bacteria-produced nerve poison (sausage poison) that, in a very mild solution, temporarily penetrates and paralyzes/weakens nerves in the local area where it is injected. In short, botulinum toxin  causes the muscle fibers to relax until the effect slowly wears off over time. It is therefore also used to relieve tension headaches in the forehead, which are often (or can be) caused by excessive use of the mimic muscles in the face.

Botulinum toxin can also be used to treat other areas, such as deep chin furrows, thickened jaw muscles that make the jaw appear too wide, gaping teeth and asymmetry in the face that is due to changes in muscle structure, for example due to hemiplegia. It can also be used to "lift" sad, drooping corners of the mouth, so that you get your smile back. Botox can also be used to treat gum disease - i.e. if the gums are too prominent when smiling. Botox can also relieve tension headaches and increased sweat production.

How does a treatment take place?

Before your first treatment with Botox, you must have a consultation with our specialist in dermatology. Here you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the treatment. In addition to thorough cosmetic guidance, you will be informed both in writing and verbally about the treatment. You then have a reflection period of at least 48 hours before you can have the actual treatment carried out. Before the actual treatment is carried out, your wrinkles are analyzed further, and you go through the planned course of treatment together. Confidential before/after photos will be taken for your journal. Treatment with botulinum toxin takes place by injecting the toxin, in carefully measured doses and with great precision, into the small muscles just under the skin. The activity of these mimic muscles, which is the cause of the problem, is thus dampened or canceled completely. The treatment itself lasts only a few minutes, and afterwards you will be able to see a slight and short-term redness. We use the world's thinnest needle 'The invisible needle' to minimize discomfort and bleeding.cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_

How long does Botox last?

The treatment is temporary. It lasts 3-6 months, and typically needs to be repeated 2-3 times a year. This varies from person to person depending on how much mimicry we want to preserve. Our experience is that the treatment lasts longer when you have received it a few times. You can always stop receiving treatment with botox. The muscles will slowly return to the starting point you had before you had the treatment. You can see botox as a process where you delay the aging of the skin.

What are possible side effects?

Transient redness or a bruise are the most common side effects - and yet even these are quite rare. If the accident happens, both parts can be covered with make-up and will quickly disappear. In a few cases, headaches are seen, which generally disappear after a day or two. Some may experience heavy eyelids or fluid around the eyes when treating the forehead. In rare cases, flu-like symptoms and headaches may occur, which will typically occur during the first day.

Your personal plan

Before we start implementing botox, we make sure to adapt the treatment to your face and your needs. We always want to create a lively and natural appearance, where we preserve your natural facial features and facial expressions. We can, for example, recommend fillers or facial treatments   to improve the result. Before you can have botox treatment, you must always have a statutory consultation with our doctor no later than 48 hours before your treatment, even if you have tried the treatment before in another clinic.
